How-to: Convert photographs into Minimalist Line Drawings for Laser Engraving

In the wake of the global lockdown in 2020, many turned to creative outlets for solace and self-discovery. For me, it was an iPad, a newfound skill in minimalist portrait illustration, and the desire to try something new on my creative journey. After the positive response to my previous blog post on "How to create Minimalist Portrait Illustration in Procreate", I decided to again; try something new in 2023. This time, I ventured into the world of engravable line portraits, exploring the fusion of art and laser technology to create unique and personalized home decor pieces using my CO2 Laser Engraving and Cutting Machine.

Single Line Drawings vs. Minimalist Portrait Illustrations

Unlike the previous style of minimalist portrait illustrations, this style is known as single line drawing. While my earlier tutorial focused on digital painting with colors, this technique involves creating solid black lines, providing a unique aesthetic that sets it apart. For this tutorial, we'll stick to the digital route, using Procreate for the entire process.

Materials Needed:
  • Reference photograph
  • Apple Pencil
  • iPad
  • Procreate Software

Converting your photographs into line drawings

Step 1: Like the previous tutorial, load your reference photo into Procreate. Start by capturing the key details of your subjects—outline the features for faces, clothing and accessories, keeping it simple without delving into hair texture. You also have the freedom to adjust your subjects' poses, adding a personal touch to the composition.

For instance, I once had a subject carrying a briefcase in the reference photo (video reference). Instead, I chose to put his hand in his pocket and adjusted the lower half of the subjects to align with my creative vision. This step alone can significantly enhance the appeal of your line drawings to clients. â€‹As an artist, it adds inherent value to your work compared to those who rely on apps and programs to transform photographs into line drawings.

Step 2: Once you've received approval for the draft, resize it to a standard 4 x 6 engraving size. Proceed to redraw the draft using the Engrave Brush, specifically designed for engraving purposes.

Keep in mind that in the initial draft, a mix of brushes may be necessary, as client-provided photos may vary in quality, and the Engrave Brush might be too thick for capturing finer details.

Digitize your Line Drawings

Step 1: Once satisfied with your line drawing, import it as a Photoshop file (.PSD) onto your computer from Procreate. Ensure your drawing consists of solid black lines.

Step 2: Bring your drawing into Illustrator and convert it into a vector file. If you lack the necessary software, engraving with a .png file is also possible. Just upload the .png to your laser machine software.

Step 3: Fit your drawing into a frame shape of your choice, either using your laser machine software or Illustrator. I opted for a 4x6 modern arch frame and saved the file as an .svg file, a vector format preferred for laser engraving due to its speed and definition.

Step 4:
Upload your file to the laser machine software and prepare it for engraving and cutting. Engraving times may vary, with the result being a beautifully engraved image. Additionally, I found engraving on the back of 3mm Clear Acrylic maintains cleaner line work.

Step 5: Weed the masking paper using a plastic scraper, ensuring not to use sharp tools on the acrylic. If using opaque acrylic and filling in lines, wait for the paint to dry completely before removing the masking.

Mounting Options and Other Applications

These engraved minimalist portraits find their place in various mounting options and applications. I commonly use a 4x6 arch wood acrylic sign holder, providing a classic touch. Alternatively, consider acrylic holders or LED light bases to transform your illustration into a unique nightstand lamp.

The versatility of this minimalist portrait style extends beyond engraved gifts. Consider adapting these illustrations into fine line tattoos, printed cards or having them printed onto apparel, offering a broader range of creative expressions.

While minimalist portraits may have been a trend in 2020, their timeless style and beauty continues to capture the hearts of those seeking a subtle yet profound way to immortalize special memories. With the fusion of single line drawings and laser engraving technology, the possibilities are endless, allowing you to transform your artistic creations into tangible, personalized keepsakes that stand the test of time. Elevate your art and create meaningful moments with engravable minimalist drawings that speak volumes about the beauty of simplicity.
