“Lockdown” is the word that no one wants to hear anymore in 2020. The first lockdown in my province of Ontario has affected mental and physical health of many people at all age group. Among the activities you can learn or perform in your home like Marie-Kondo ‘ing your apartment or write a blog (like me!), learning Modern Brush Pen Calligraphy is one way to keep you healthy during these uncertain time of lockdown.
Winter blues is a real illness and now, the dark winter has its claw upon us with the lockdown the province of Ontario announced in November. Like the first lock down in March, we tend to find things to learn and do to keep our mind occupied while looking forward to the day that we can go back to normal lives. Mental health is also being negatively affected during the uncertainty of the pandemic lockdowns worldwide.

What did I do to support my mental/ physical health during the first lockdowns? Here are some of them:
  • Cleared out my wardrobe
  • Learn to cook my favorite vegan Vietnamese dishes
  • Learned Calligraphy Engraving
  • Created The Intro to Modern Brush Pen Calligraphy Worksheet for A Grateful Note Downloadable
  • Core Body Exercise/ Physiotheraphy Rehab
  • Completed Home Renovation projects
  • Learned to create effective Flat-Lay Photography

I also practiced and redefined my skill as a calligrapher. Hello! Magazine, The Independent UK, Glamour Magazine UK, The Guardian UK have recommend Learning and Practicing Calligraphy as one of the activity you can learn that brings mental benefit to its learner.

"Anyone can learn Modern Calligraphy!"
This might be a bold statement to some but if you can write letters in the alphabet and numbers from 0-9, you can learn modern calligraphy in 2020. You are being exposed to letterforms daily; even though we sometimes take them for granted and pay little to no attention to them. We depends on letters to navigate through life; using them to express ourselves and to communicate with others. Letters allow us to learn different languages, convey information, consume and produce educational materials.

“The origin of Calligraphy with brushes dates back to ancient China during the Shang dynasty becoming more common during the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) where it was expected for all educated men and some women to be proficient at it. All the rest of the Western scripts (or styles) evolved from the Roman originals”- Joy Kelly

In the digital age where computer text is a norm, calligraphy and hand lettering becomes a demanding art form. Today, learning calligraphy is relatively easy with brush pens. Brush pens like the Tombow Fudenosuke are mess free, ready to use and available in local art supply stores or Amazon. Modern calligraphers create their own alphabet to reflect their personal style and seeking inspiration in everything around them. In modern calligraphy, we learn to rules to break them like a pro.

  1. Learning calligraphy also comes with benefits. Here are some of them:Meditative/ Relaxing: This is the most important benefits of learning calligraphy to cope with pandemic lockdowns. Modern calligraphy is a therapeutic activity that offers the same benefits similar to those experienced by people who practice meditation. Practicing calligraphy gives us something to focus in, quiets our minds and allow your brain to breath.
  2. Motor Skills/ Memory Retention: When practicing calligraphy, you need to know how to use your pen to create strokes and form letters. This type of learning with your hands activates the motor area while engage the language portion of your brain. The muscle memory comes from calligraphy will help you in the process to create your own calligraphy style. That is how children learned to write and read and this alone makes calligraphy suitable for all age.
  3. It is Inexpensive to Start: All you need to start a calligraphy journey is a pen, some paper and time to practice. 4. You can also make/ save money from your skill: While some choose to learn calligraphy for joy, there are some who have used the skill to make money full-time or as a side hustle. Calligraphy is a niche, luxury service can cost pretty penny. If you create calligraphy for yourself, you can save a lot of money in making your own invitations, custom personalized gifts and cards.
